04 Jul Shadow Labyrinth: Pac-Man’s Metroidvania variant will be released this July
On July 18, 2025, the Pac-Man universe will be completely reinvented with the release of Shadow Labyrinth. The new game transforms the arcade classic into a 2D Metroidvania adventure. Developed by Bandai Namco, the title will be released for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, and PC, promising a nostalgic gaming experience with modern gameplay mechanics.
Instead of controlling the iconic yellow Pac-Man, the player takes on the role of Swordsman No. 8, a mysterious warrior who ventures into a vast maze accompanied by Puck, a small ball with special abilities. As the game progresses, the two characters can merge to unlock unique movement, attack, and puzzle-solving abilities, including mechanics inspired by exploration games like Hollow Knight and Metroid Dread.

What’s most impressive is how Shadow Labyrinth retains the retro charm of the original. In certain sections, the player accesses classic arcade levels that pay homage to Pac-Man’s roots with pixel graphics, 80s sounds, and the adrenaline rush of dodging ghosts in enclosed environments. These sections are integrated into the storyline and function as optional challenges that reward players with permanent upgrades.

The game also incorporates science fiction elements. The story revolves around the creation of an artificial intelligence called GAIA, which influences the world of the labyrinth and the development of the characters. The game world combines retrofuturistic neon colors with dark accents, giving the game a distinctive visual identity.

Released to coincide with Pac-Man’s 45th anniversary, Shadow Labyrinth not only celebrates the series’ legacy but also catapults it into the future. Its hybrid gameplay, blending classic action with deep Metroidvania elements, makes it one of the most anticipated retro games of the year.

An ideal choice for retro fans and anyone looking for something new with nostalgic charm. This time, the labyrinth will be much bigger… and darker.
